Begin your lesson journey

Before your lessons it is important to be prepared before hand so here is a breakdown of things you might want to prepare upfront.

1

Apply for your provisional licence

You need a provisional licence before you can start driving lessons.

Apply online via the GOV.UK website.

You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old (but 17 to drive a car).

2

Learn the highway code

Get familiar with the Highway Code, road signs, and driving laws.

You can use the official DVSA app, online quizzes, or a physical copy of the code.

3

Book your lesson

You can book your lesson online or over the phone, please allow at least 72 hours prior to booking to ensure availability of your lesson.
4

Preparing your documents

Bring your provisional licence to your first lesson.

Some instructors may ask you to fill in basic paperwork or show proof of ID/address.

5

Be mentally prepared

It’s okay to feel nervous – everyone starts somewhere!
Go in with a positive attitude and don’t worry about making mistakes.
6

Dress appropriately

Wear flat, sensible shoes with good grip (trainers are ideal).
Avoid heels, flip-flops, or bulky clothing that may restrict movement.
7

Get a good-nights sleep

Being well-rested helps with focus and reaction times.
Avoid energy drinks or anything that might make you jittery.
8

Plan your journey

Make sure you know where your lesson starts and ends.
If you’re being picked up from home, be ready a few minutes early.
9

Bring your questions

Jot down anything you’re unsure about – your instructor is there to help.
Asking questions shows you’re keen to learn!
